Michigan Representative Brenda Carter: A Voice for the People

· Interview

"Every day, I am driven by the belief that every child deserves a fair shot at success, every worker deserves respect and dignity, and every citizen deserves a voice in the government."

1. Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in politics?

"My journey into politics was driven by a deep commitment to public service and a

passion for making a difference in my community. As a lifelong advocate for education, I

saw firsthand the challenges facing our students, teachers, and families during my time

as President of the Pontiac Board of Education and the Michigan Association of School

Boards. I knew that if we wanted real, lasting change, we needed strong voices at the

policy-making table."

"I stepped into the Michigan Legislature because I believe in fighting for quality education,

workers’ rights, economic development, and social justice. My goal has always been to

ensure that government works for the people it serves—especially those who have been

historically underserved and overlooked. Every day, I am driven by the belief that every

child deserves a fair shot at success, every worker deserves respect and dignity, and

every citizen deserves a voice in their government. That is why I do this work, and that is

why I will continue to fight for the people of Michigan."

2. What are the key issues you are focusing on during your current term?

"During this term, my focus remains on education, economic justice, public safety, and

healthcare affordability. I am working to ensure adequate funding for public schools,

expand career and technical education programs, and support teacher recruitment and

retention. Protecting workers' rights, strengthening prevailing wage laws, and promoting

affordable housing and small business growth are also key priorities. "

"In public safety, I am advocating for juvenile justice reform through the Juvenile Justice

Diversion Act (HB 4625), improving community policing initiatives, and addressing gun

violence prevention. Additionally, I am tackling rising healthcare costs by working with

the Michigan Health Purchasers Coalition (MHPC) and expanding access to mental

health services. Consumer protections, including legislation like the Peer-to-Peer Car

Sharing Act (HB 5950), remain a focus as well. Through these efforts, I am committed to

advancing policies that uplift Michigan families, strengthen our economy, and build a

more just and equitable future for all."

3. How do you feel your experience as a woman has shaped your perspective and approach

to politics?

"My experience as a woman has deeply shaped my perspective and approach to politics. I

understand the unique challenges women face in the workforce, in education, and in

accessing healthcare, and that awareness drives my commitment to policies that

promote equity, opportunity, and justice. As a leader, I bring a collaborative and

solutions-focused mindset, ensuring that diverse voices—especially those historically

underrepresented—are heard at the decision-making table. "

"Being a woman in politics has reinforced my belief in lifting others as we climb. I

advocate fiercely for working families, quality education, and economic empowerment

because I know that when women and families thrive, entire communities benefit. My

lived experiences fuel my passion for public service, and they remind me every day why it

is essential to champion policies that create a more inclusive and fair society for all."

4. What steps do you believe need to be taken to achieve gender equality in political

representation?

"Achieving gender equality in political representation requires intentional action at every

level. We must remove systemic barriers that prevent women from running for office by

ensuring access to funding, mentorship, and leadership training. Expanding civic

education and engagement for young women and girls is essential to building a pipeline

of future leaders."

"Policies that support work-life balance, such as paid family leave and affordable

childcare, are also critical in making political careers more accessible. Additionally, we

must challenge biases and stereotypes that discourage women from seeking leadership

roles. By fostering a more inclusive and supportive political environment, we can ensure

that women have an equal seat at the table and a powerful voice in shaping our future."

5. What skills do you believe are essential for high school students aspiring to pursue a

career in politics? What specific activities or organizations can they join to develop these

skills?

"High school students aspiring to a career in politics need strong communication,

leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The ability to listen, collaborate,

and advocate effectively is essential for making a real impact."

"To develop these skills, students should join debate teams, student government, or youth

councils to gain experience in public speaking and policymaking. Volunteering for

political campaigns, civic engagement groups, or community service projects can provide

firsthand insight into grassroots organizing and public service. Organizations like Junior

State of America (JSA), Model UN, and Girls State/Boys State offer excellent opportunities

to learn about government and leadership. By actively engaging in these experiences,

students can build the foundation needed for a successful career in politics."

6. What advice would you give to young women in high school aspiring to enter politics?

"My advice to young women in high school aspiring to enter politics is to believe in

yourself, stay informed, and get involved. Don’t wait for permission to lead—step up,

speak out, and take action on the issues that matter to you. Build strong communication

and leadership skills by joining student government, debate teams, or advocacy groups,

and seek out mentors who can guide and support you."

"Surround yourself with people who uplift you, and never let doubt or barriers hold you

back. Politics needs diverse voices, and your perspective is valuable. Be fearless, stay

persistent, and always remember that your voice has the power to create real change."
